And while the fact is well disguised, the Thunderbird and Continental shared some glass and interior structure, aka black metal. (Learn more about the groundbreaking 1958-60 Thunderbirds here.) And the exterior sheet metal was all new, but with some obvious roots in the 1953 Ford X-100 dream car (read about it here) and the 1961 Lincoln Continental-especially in the nose and grille, as shown above. And the third-generation 1961-63 Thunderbirds, with their pure, projectile-like styling, will forever be known as the Bullet Birds.īuilt on a unit-construction body/chassis with 113-inch wheelbase, the Bullet Bird was similar in size and layout to the ’58-’60 Thunderbird, maintaining a winning formula. The second-generation four-seaters of 1958-60 won the name Square Birds. The original two-seat Thunderbirds of 1955-57 are called the Baby Birds. Somehow, the generations of Ford Thunderbird often manage to inspire nicknames. I own 2 '63 Galaxie 500XL's (one's a 352, t'other is a 390), and a FE equipped '65 F100.so I don't need to go too far to look and compare engine mounts/brackets, and blocks. With their pure, projectile-like styling, the third-generation 1961-63 Thunderbirds have become known as the Bullet Birds. > The same service part replacement 390 short block was used 1961/72. The motor mount mounting holes will be the same car/truck, only the brackets and actual mounts are different. The same bare block rough casting was used for 352/360/390. Look at that T-Bird 390 engine, on the left front is cast 352. Why did I use the T-Bird analogy? The Galaxie motor mounts/brackets are the same 61/64, but are different in 1965, because an entirely new body & frame was introduced. Then the mounts are C6SZ-6038-A R/L is the same. The only dif in the mounts is if the 1966 Bird had a 428 engine. Anyone else care to comment?1961/66 390 T-Birds use the same motor mounts because the engine block is the same: C4SZ-6038-C right side & C4SZ-6038-D left side. It's always a gamble.Ģ) Bill, I'd love to hammer out this motor mount issue. It might be worth looking around on eBay to see what stuff is going for - at $100, you might make a few more bucks reselling the stuff. And worth the bucks to people with show cars or collectibles that want to make it "right". To clear up some things, not to lend any real expertise.ġ) Ford428CJ mentions those 61/63 engines might be worth something to the right person. The chromed 390 covers also spell out Thunderbird. Chromed valve covers were offered for all the FE engines. All the 1961/64 390 engines, regardless of whether in a Galaxie or a Bird will have T H U N D E R B I R D spelled out in block letters on the valve covers.ģ52 engines valve covers 1961/64 spell F O R D. The valve covers used 1961/64 are rounded, have no oil caps. This Z refers to the standard 390 engine, not the 1961 HiPo version. * Ford Confusion: The VIN engine code of Z was used on 1962/71 Fords and 1962/67 T-Birds.
